It is also known as soccer, and another name for it is football. It is very popular throughout the world. The game originated from England in the nineteenth century. The English-Foot ball Association was founded in the year 1863. rules of the game. Football was introduced to Nigeria by British Sailors and Merchants. Members of the crew of British ships often played Football at the port while the local inhabitants wanted them play and learnt the game. In fact Calabar was called the cradle of football in Nigeria because the game started and became popular there. Subsequently the game was introduced into Nigeria schools and colleges by the English teachers.
Today, the game had developed tremendously as Nigerian takes part in the continental and various categories of global competitions such as :
1. the FIFA world cup
2. The junior world cup 11-20
3. The world Kodak cup 11-17
4. The Olympic Soccer tournament and
5. The all Africa games, to mention but a few.
In inter national matches, the dimensions of the field of play are 110x75m (maximum) and 100x64m (minium). The following measurement should also be noted:
1. THE GOAL AREA: This consists of an area marked by a line. 5.50m along the goal line, another line 5.50m into the field of play on each side of the goal post.
2. Penalty Arc: it is 9.15m from the penalty mark
3. penalty mark: it is a spot 11m from the centre of the line through the middle of the two goal posts.
4. centre circle: this is of radius 9.15m.
NATURE OF THE GAME
The players must be 11 players in each
1. Goal keeper 2. Right fullback 3. Left fullback
5. Right halfback 6. Centre halfback etc.
A referee and two assistant referees direct the affairs of the game. At the starting of the game the referee gives a signal by blowing his whistle and a place kick is taken from then on the ball can be passed from player to player, dribbling, kicking and shooting into goal. A goal is scored when the whole of the ball has passed over a goal line between the goal post under the crossbar. A goal cannot be scored with an arm or hand.
Basic skills and techniques of the game are;
Kicking, volleying, dribbling, trapping, passing and tracking.
Rules and regulations of the games are;
1. player must not attempt to kick an opponent
2. he must not trip an opponent
3. He must not jump at an opponent
4. He must not push an opponent with any part of his body.
5. He must not charge an opponent in a violent manner.
WHY I LIKE THE GAME
1. It promotes unity among fans of a club and people of a country.
2. It is an interesting game
3. It is a lucrative venture, players particularly world stars are well to do.
4. It is a profession
5. It enhances popularity of people like some players e.g. Jaj-jay Okeocha, ronaldina of Brazil, Micheal Obi of Nigeria, Others like, Thierry Henry, Obafemi Martins etc.
When it is time for major competitions I always wish my parents are not around so that they don't break the excitement and enjoyment with chores.
